David Fougère - The Letter I Didn't Send
David Fougère 1944; - 2025
was born in Galt, Ontario in 1944; rode tricycle across city at age four; delivered newspapers and set up pins in a bowling alley; hitchhiked to Panama and through forty- four of the United States, across Canada many times.
Age 18 to 19; worked as machine operator in a textile mill; studied social sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, one year; loaded trucks for the CPR; played bass for The Stormy Clovers 1965 to 1968 (first band to play Leonard Cohen songs); survived psychedelic era.
Created music for award- winning Canada Film Board animated film by Ryan Larkin called 'Walking'; caught chickens on the night shift in Quebec; pumped gas; painted houses; installed aluminum and vinyl siding; drove a three ton delivery truck.
Played country music in bars and prisons; studied electronics and fixed televisions for twenty years; taught a course in electricity for maintenance mechanics in a community college; worked briefly as a supply teacher in the prison system; as a self-employed repair guy I fixed TVs, stereos, tape decks, medical equipment, radionics instruments, and computer monitors.
Always fixed his own car, still dose; divorced, rambled, and fell upon hard times
hitchhiked to the west coast, age 50; worked as a maintenance man in a children's camp in northern Ontario, plowing snow, removing garbage, testing and chlorinating drinking water, fixing doors, windows, floors, plumbing, roofing and wiring.
Staged four concerts with my daughter dancer-choreographer Nicole Fougère, among them 'The Letter I Didn't Send' in Haliburton, Ontario and 'Half A Harmony' in Brussels, Belgium; went back to Panama at age 60, riding chicken buses
spent some winters in Guatemala; created the Cd 'Somewhere In The Milky Way' with songs written over a forty year period; wrote a book, The Hobostarship Book, with travel stories from 1963 to the present and the lyrics to forty-two songs
We have lost another very talented and creative musician, David Fougere. Haven't see David in Haliburton for a few years but he often dropped in to play at open stage. Such a good songwriter. He and his daughter performed a very memorable concert at the NLPAP that include song and dance. Laurel McCauley was one of the backup singers. David worked at Camp Kandalore for years as the maintenance guy. Dave was briefly in a care home in Corner Brook, Newfoundland where his daughter, Nicole lives.
"Though his voice may now rest in silence, his spirit remains in every note he played, in every word he wrote, in every heart he touched. Like the stars that still shine long after the sun has set, Dave’s light will continue to accompany us. Farewell, dear friend. May the wind carry you gently home." Gabi Dumbsky
